Chakra Introduction

All of our energy comes from five sources: plants and animals; water; air; sunlight; and biomagnetic energy, also known as Chi, Ki or Prana. We absorb plants, animal foods and water through the digestive tract, oxygen through the lungs, sunlight through the skin, and energy through the chakras.

There are seven main energy centers of your body, called Chakras. Chakras are spiraling disks of light with wide mouths that spin a few inches outside the body through which they drink in the radiant fuel stored in the Human Energy Field (aura) to nurture us spiritually, emotionally, physically, mentally and creatively.

The Chakras transmit information of past trauma and pain, contained in imprints in the Human Energy Field, into the nervous system. The chakras affect our moods and influence our emotional and physical well-being. The chakras are like a map of a person, holding the history of all that has happened to them.

The Chakras are the organs of the Human Energy Field. Every life-form has Chakras, including plants and animals. The Chakras also connect to the endocrine glands that regulate all of human behavior. An imbalance in one of your Chakras will affect the endocrine gland associated with that Chakra and cause disharmony on body, mind, spirit and emotional levels. Reiki, and other energy modalities, works with these Chakra centers where the “light” energy is pooled and then distributed throughout the body via energy meridians or rivers very similar to our circulatory system and nervous system.

Your 1st Chakra is at the base of your spine and is often called the Root Chakra. It is located at the genitals, and is usually associated with the ovaries/testes. It is vibrant red. It grounds us and the foundation of our energy system. It is connected to Mother Earth. It is affected by how secure and safe we feel. It deals with survival energy and basic issues like food, water, shelter and sex.

Your 2nd Chakra is below your navel and is called the Belly or Sacral Chakra. It is associated with the adrenal glands, your stress glands. Its color is orange. It is the home of our passions. In the 1st chakra we have sex, but in the 2nd we make love. The 2nd chakra processes the Earth energy taken in through the 1st chakra and digests emotional energies into the nervous system. It’s associated with a person’s self-esteem and self-confidence. Your creativity stems from here. Control issues, pelvic and reproductive organs, including bladder, appendix and uterus are issues at this chakra.

Your 3rd Chakra is just above your navel and is called the Solar Plexus Chakra. It represents your will power and drive. It is associated with the pancreas gland which produces insulin, giving us energy. It is solar yellow. It is here that we use energy to fuffill our dreams. Dominance, stomach, small bowels, and liver are issues at this chakra level.

Your 4th Chakra is at your heart. It is located at your sternum. It is associated with the thymus gland, the main organ in the immune system. Two colors are used for the heart center; the primary one is green and the other is rose. It is at this center that we share universal love. The 2nd and 4th chakras have a unique interrelationship. The uterus is sometimes called the “low heart” while the heart is the “high heart.” If the low heart has been closed, through rape, incest, abuse or shame, a woman cannot truly open her high heart. Breasts, lungs and upper back are represented at this chakra.

Your 5th Chakra is at your throat and is often called the Throat Chakra. It is located at the base of the neck and is associated with the thyroid and parathyroid glands. Its color is blue and its function is communication, both physical and psychic. At this chakra, we envision our futures and speak our truth. A clear 5th chakra enables you to talk as well as listen. Neck pain, teeth and gum problems are areas of concern at this chakra.

Your 6th Chakra is your Third Eye or Brow Chakra located above and between the physical eyes and associated with the pituitary gland which is the master gland that influences, growth, metabolism and general body chemistry. This is the chakra of psychic perception and understanding of the Oneness of the Universe. Its color is indigo. At this chakra, we express the divine within ourselves and the oneness of everything. Vision problems, brain tumors, seizures, blindness, deafness are areas of concern at this chakra.

Your 7th Chakra is your Crown Chakra. It is located at the top of the head, slightly to the back of the highest part of the skull. It is the portal to the heavens as the 1st Chakra is the portal to the earth. Universal Life-force Energy enters through this Chakra, feeding the entire Chakra system. It is associated with the pineal gland which is linked with the production of melatonin and regulates our body clock. It’s color is white and we become one with the universe at this Chakra, remembering where we come from. The Crown Chakra is the place of perception of spirit guides and the skill of channeling. It is also related to morals and conscience.

Understanding energy anatomy holds the key to true healing, rather than just masking our symptoms, because it offers a comprehensive and holistic view of how each of us co-creates health or disease. Most metaphysical healers believe that all physical pain has nonphysical roots in emotional trauma or negative mental patterns.

Our body heals when we’re living in the present moment, right now. When we’re truly present, we can heal almost anything. But most people tie up most of their energy in woundings from their past, while the rest of it is consumed by worrying about the future. Living in the now is a skill that is developed through introspection, meditation and taking leaps of faith into freedom and joy—one day at a time.

The Native Americans, Hindus and Westerners all believe in the Chakra system and that each Chakra is connected to nature and our destinies. You can learn techniques for cleansing and balancing your own Chakras to maintain optimum health and spiritual oneness. The exercise below is a good way to sense your chakras and begin your healing.

CLEANSING THE CHAKRAS IN THE SHOWER

Practice this in the morning while you are in the shower. With your left hand three or four inches above the skin feel for your 1st Chakra at the base of your genitals. Spin the Chakra counter-clockwise (imagine that your body is the face of the clock) three or four times, rotating your fingertips in a circle. Rinse your fingers in the water. This eliminates the sludge and toxins that adhere to the walls of the chakra. Now with your right hand, spin the Chakra clockwise three or four times. Repeat both steps for all seven chakras, making sure to rinse your fingers thoroughly in between. Try to sense the dense energy—like cotton candy—on the chakras. This exercise increases the speed of the chakras, allowing each energy vortex to spin optimally. A clean chakra is able to draw in natural energy to replenish the reserves in the Human Energy Field. The 1st chakra, which is closest to the earth spins the slowest and each chakra above that spins a little faster, ending with the crown chakra, which spins the fastest.

Good luck sensing your energy and beginning your intuitive journey.
